B.U.I.L.D. (Build Unity, Independence, Liberty, Dignity) was founded in the 1960s during the Civil Rights era when several prominent African-American leaders, including Robert Coles (a local Black architect) and prominent Black ministers, contacted Saul Alinsky, a well-known community organizer, to help form an organization for Buffalo's East Side.
